Warwickshire launches new boys’ choir

Warwickshire County Council’s brand new choir are perfecting their scales in time for their first rehearsal next week.

The County Choristers are a new County Music Service group made up from County Boys Choir members of advanced ability who are ready to stretch their voices to a much higher level.

The boys, aged 8-14, will get together for the first time to practice as one voice on Saturday 5 September at the Coten End Music Workshop, Warwick. The daylong session will offer them a chance to sing together and try out new styles and more challenging compositions.

The new group hopes to build upon the successes of the already well established boys’ choir. Director Garry Jones created the choir with support from national music charity Youth Music. He said:  “The County Boys’ brilliant performances at the Symphony Hall, St. Mary’s, New College and Christ Church Oxford and a sell out concert at the Great Malvern Priory by the County Boys made me realise that there was great potential to challenge them even further.

“Members will be trained to sing three and four part music, and in styles including classical, sacred, musical theatre and popular repertoire.  The choristers’ musical style is unusual for this type of group and we hope to set a national example by experimenting with lots of jazz and rock numbers as well as more classical pieces.”

“The County Choristers will all remain full members of the 100 strong County Boys Choir so that both groups will receive suitable challenge and rewards but also encourage and support each other.”
