Choices help people to take the reins

Families in North Warwickshire are invited to a day of activities in which a day service for disabled people living locally is highlighted.

The day has been organised by Circles Network, an organisation which has a contract with Warwickshire County Council to work in the community helping people with physical disabilities.

The activity day, at Circles Network branch on North Street in Atherstone on Tuesday 8 September, starts at 10am and runs until 2pm.  The theme of the day is health and wellbeing so there will be the chance to sample massage, healthy cooking sessions, a family history society and the chance to enjoy a range of arts and crafts.

The network’s aim is to build inclusive communities where everyone contributes.  It provides a range of training locally which can be tailored to meet varying needs.

Among the attractions of the day is a pioneering project called Taking the Reins.  This is aimed at people with low self-esteem or independence in which they work and bond with a horse to control its movements.

The process is known as Equine Facilitated Learning.  The horse responds to body gestures, breathing and voice.  Once the handler masters these skills, they can develop their relationship with the horse and their own self-esteem and communication skills tend to make dramatic progress.

Circles Network Chief Executive, Mandy Neville, said; “There is a lot of excitement about showcasing the activities of a 21st century day service.  I hope that people will be inspired by the examples of activities relating to enhancing health and wellbeing that are so much in evidence throughout.”

Anne Clarke, self directed funding manager for Warwickshire County Council, said:  “We are delighted to work with Circles Network who carry out excellent work with disabled people to increase the choice and control they exercise in their own lives and to participate in community life.”
