Personal safety messages for young people

New visual materials to help young people to be responsible for their personal safety will be launched in Warwickshire schools and online later this month.

Warwickshire County Council’s Community Safety Team has developed slide shows and posters in conjunction with partners to be shown at local secondary schools and on The Zone website (http://www.wpthezone.co.uk). The aim of the project is to get key messages to youngsters, helping them to stay safe outside, online, and when using mobile phones.

Safety tips such as making sure someone knows where you are, protecting your identity online and keeping your phone out of sight are covered in the presentations. Useful contact information for services that offer safety advice, and provide help and support to victims and witnesses of crime is also included.

The personal safety presentation - the first in a set looking at community safety concerns for young people including bullying, arson and substance misuse - has been under development for some time. It will be shown at secondary schools in Nuneaton & Bedworth and North Warwickshire initially and rolled out to other schools across the county if proves to be successful.

Warwickshire County Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety said: “The world is changing and while technology has brought many benefits to young people’s lives, it has created a wider variety of dangers faced by young people in the 21st century.

“This show will help make sure that young people are aware of how to combat threats posed to their safety from a variety of modern sources as well as taking precautions when out at night.”
