Further consultation for Waterside and Southern Lane

Further consultation is to take place on proposed improvement plans for Waterside and Southern Lane in Stratford.

Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet has asked for further consultation on modification to the original proposed Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs).

After considering further representations from Members and the public, Cabinet sought changes to the scheme which mean that the existing parking arrangements would be retained on Southern Lane and that cyclists would be allowed to travel in both directions on the length of Waterside between Bridge Street and Chapel Lane only.

Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed changes should make these in writing to Roger Bennett, Traffic Projects Group, PO Box 43, Shire Hall, Warwick to be received no later than noon on Monday, 5th October.

The results of the consultation will be considered by Cabinet at its meeting on 15th October.

Cllr Alan Cockburn, the county council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “This was always going to be a difficult decision and a balance of views had to be made.

"I am hopeful that the proposed changes will be well received by the people of Stratford and that the improvements to Waterside will be able to proceed in time to complement the completion of the Theatre next summer, for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.”

David Pywell, Director of World Class Stratford, said: “The implementation of Waterside will be the final piece in the jigsaw to upgrading the waterfront.

"Combined with the Bancroft Gardens and the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the improvements would mean that Stratford will at last have the opportunity to begin to compete with other historic towns in providing a first class environment.”

If the scheme is finally approve by Cabinet on 15th October, there will be detailed discussion with businesses, the Town Management Partnership and the Birthplace Trust, before work starts, over the proposed timing and scheduling of works, to mitigate impact on businesses, the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations and to ensure an ongoing dialogue.
