A chance to attend the National Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey

Six lucky local people are being offered the chance to join the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire at the National Memorial Service to honour veterans of the First World War.

The Service, which is being held at Westminster Abbey at 11 am on 11th November, has been arranged following the deaths earlier this year of Henry Allingham and Harry Patch, the last UK residents to have served in the Great War.

Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will be present, as well as other public figures, and the service will be broadcast live on BBC television.

Each county has been allocated a number of seats at the service based on population, and the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Martin Dunne, has been asked by the Ministry of Defence to nominate six people from Warwickshire.

Those nominated will be able to take a spouse, partner, friend or carer with them. The tickets are intended for people of all ages and walks of life who are related to or connected in some way with those who served in the First World War.

Martin Dunne said, “This will be a wonderful occasion where the whole country can remember, and pay tribute, to all those who fought in the First World War.  It is fitting that representatives are being drawn from throughout the country and we expect that many people will wish to be included.”

Any Warwickshire resident who would like to be considered for one of the six places should contact the Lord-Lieutenant by letter or email at Warwickshire Lieutenancy Office, 3 Northgate Street, Warwick CV34 4SP, email: lieutenancy@warwickshire.gov.uk.

You should give your full name, address, postcode and daytime telephone number, and say briefly what your connection is with the First World War and why you would wish to have the opportunity to go to the service.  Your letter or email must arrive no later than Tuesday, 29th September.

The six successful applicants will be contacted by 5th October.  They will need to make their own arrangements for travelling to Westminster Abbey on the day.
