Fire crews tackle community centre blaze!
Firefighters from Leamington were called to tackle a blaze at the Community Centre on Lower Avenue, Leamington Spa at 3.20pm today (24 September 2009).
The initial call indicated a number of people where still in the premises; however, on attendance fire crews were informed that all persons within the building had been evacuated by Community Centre Staff.
On arrival crews were confronted with a well developed roof fire which destroyed 50% of the roof and a large percentage of the ground floor.
At the height of the fire eleven appliances from across the county and a hydraulic platform attended the incident. Six jets were required to bring the fire under control.
Station Manager, Chris Thompson said:
“Crews have worked tirelessly to tackle the blaze and I would like to commend the community centre staff for evacuating the building quickly. A number of people had to leave their cars whilst we tackled the blaze, those vehicles can now be collected. Vehicle owners should report to the cordon at the junction of Lower Avenue and Spencer Street where they will be met by the Police.”
Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service are now working with the District and County Council to make the structure safe.
