Warwickshire celebrates World Mental Health Day
Warwickshire County Council is encouraging people to think about their mental health and wellbeing for World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2009.
Research from the Mental Health Foundation shows that in the UK 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any one year, the most common being depression and anxiety. Many people who suffer from low level mental illness find that seeking their own support is effective and over the past year a number of new resources have been introduced across the county.
Wellbeing centres in each locality, better online resources, and a new scheme to make more self-help information and literature available in libraries are just some of the ways that support has been improved even further.
Following a successful pilot, Warwickshire is rolling out a ‘Books on Prescription’ scheme in libraries in the coming months to offer support to people with common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Working with the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust and a team of local surgeries, the library service is providing recommended self-help books which are prescribed by GPs and local practice therapists. Librarians are being specially trained in mental health awareness to give patients the confidence that they will be treated with sensitivity and complete confidentiality.
Dr Graeme Betts, Strategic Director for Adult, Health and Community Services at Warwickshire County Council, said: “We hope that everyone will give mental health and wellbeing a thought on World Mental Health Day this year. We want to improve outcomes for people who have mental health needs and we are delighted that our library service is supporting work with other agencies in Warwickshire to make help and support even more accessible. “
World Mental Health Day was started in 1992 and every year thousands of people internationally use the day to promote greater awareness and understanding of mental health and wellbeing.
A number of informal events are being held around the county in the lead up to World Mental Health Day. For further details on events and services please log onto http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/mentalhealth
