Anti-knife crime project to perform in Nuneaton
Highlighting the consequences of knife crime will be the aim of a group of young people from Rugby when they perform in front of top dignitaries this weekend.
The Street Ikons Community Dance Project (S.I.C) – previously known as Stop Knife Crime – have been asked by the Mayor of Nuneaton, Cllr Tom Wilson, to perform at an event in Queens Road, Nuneaton, on Saturday 10 October.
Supported by Warwickshire Crimebeat and managed by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, the group of 8 to 13-year-olds from the Brownsover and Benn PODS in Rugby use various methods to share their message with the community such as dance and poetry portraying ‘gang culture’ and the devastating effects of knife crime.
They will perform in front of a number of civil heads including the High Sheriff of Warwickshire, Lady Kilmaine; the chair of Warwickshire County Council, Cllr Peter Barnes; and the chairman of Warwick District Council, Cllr Norman Pratt.
Patrick Carroll, Project Leader for Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, said: “These young people have worked incredibly hard to raise awareness of the effects of knife crime and have been well received at schools and businesses across Rugby.
“So they are really looking forward to taking their message to shoppers and local dignitaries in Nuneaton this weekend.”
Crimebeat is funded by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire and is supported by the private sector. It is managed by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme and aims to reduce crime, the fear of crime and to create safer communities. This initiative enables and empowers young people to make a difference and also encourages them to feel part of their community.
Warwickshire Crimebeat is continually looking for groups of young people to apply for funding. For more information contact Mark Bolton, Operations Development Manager, on 02476 754174 or email markbolton@warwickshire.gov.uk.
