Residents remember World War II memories

Older people at a Warwickshire County Council Care Home in Rugby have been sharing memories from the Second World War by staging an indoor street party.

Twenty residents who live at Abbotsbury Care Home in Rugby took part in a series of events looking back more than 60 years ago.  The street party was a reminder of the end of World War II. A cinema was also set up at the home showing old world war II flicks to create an authentic atmosphere with popcorn and choc ices.

Lorna Cowley, aged 85, was in the Land Army during the war between September 1942 and January 1947. She still had her old Land Army uniform and was keen to show it off to staff and residents at the home.

“I’ve got fond memories. I met my husband whilst working on a farm in Newbold Common, Leamington,” she said.

Many of the residents at the home had been involved in the war in different ways, some had worked in ammunitions factories and were keen to share their memories.

Wanda Cicholaz, Manager of Abbotsbury for Warwickshire County Council, said: “We’ve had a wonderful time, the staff have worked really hard, and it has been fantastic to share in the memories of our residents.”

Abbotsbury is part of Warwickshire County Council’s Adult, Health and Community Services. It has 20 permanent residents, 6 respite beds, 4 intermediate and 4 assessment places.
