Speed cameras at A444 Griff works

Mobile speed cameras are to enforce the 40mph speed limit through the A444 Griff roundabout works in Nuneaton following concern from workers at the speed of traffic.

From Monday Warwickshire Safer Roads Partnership will be stepping up the enforcement of the temporary 40 mph speed limit in response to concerns that traffic is currently not obeying the speed limit and endangering both road users and the contractors working on the site.

In 2007, Griff Roundabout was identified as the second worst accident location in Warwickshire. This junction is one of the busiest in the county, and the main route between Nuneaton to the M6 Junction 3 and the south. In the three year period between 2004 and 2006, there had been total of 39 recorded injury crashes.

In the interest of safety during the construction period of the scheme, the speed limit has been temporarily reduced from 50 mph to 40 mph for the protection of the workforce. There have been concerns that motorists have not complied with the reduced speed limit, and this has been confirmed by the contractor for this project.

The temporary speed limit will be enforced using mobile speed cameras. The Police will be enforcing throughout the works.

Motorists are also being reminded that night road closures of the A444 to allow for works to continue on the Griff roundabout are underway and will continue until December 11.

The closures are from 8pm to 6am on weekdays, and 6pm to 8am at weekends.

These closures aim to reduce traffic disruption in the daytime and reduce the construction period of the project. The closures are at:

A444 Griff Way to Nuneaton;
B4113 Coventry Road (Hill Top);
A444 Bedworth Bypass; and
St Davids Way

Alternative route for the A444 Griff Way, between the Griff Island and George Eliot Hospital Island will be via B4113 Coventry Road, Chilvers Rise and A444 Griff Way and vice versa. The alternative route for the A444 Bedworth Bypass, between Griff Island and the Cinema Island will be via Walsingham Drive, St Davids Way and Bedworth Bypass and vice versa.

Pedestrian access to and from properties and land adjacent to the lengths of road to be closed will be maintained at all times. Vehicle access will also be maintained where possible.

There will be regular updates on the Warwickshire website on the dates the closures will take place at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/roads

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause, we will endeavour to carry out and complete the work as speedily and efficiently as possible.”
