Young students give voice to Hillmorton

Student representatives from each of the seven schools in the Hillmorton cluster of Rugby had an energetic start to their day at the Young Voice of Hillmorton Student Council Conference.

The day, organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Extended Services saw the young students roused by a ‘wake and shake session’ lead by this years Eastern Warwickshire Schools Sports Partnership young ambassadors for sport Kelly Williams and Lauren Taylor.

Participating schools included Abbots Farm Junior and Infant schools, Eastlands Primary, Paddox Primary, Hillmorton Primary, English Martyrs Primary and Ashlawn School and Science College.

Pupils took part in a number of interactive workshops lead by community artists from Rugby’s Tantalus project, Rugby Borough council’s Play and Open Spaces Team, Rugby Art Gallery and Museum and Warwickshire Police’s Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

Councillor Kathryn Lawrence, Young Persons Champion at Rugby Borough Council, addressed the pupils encouraging them to think about how they would like to improve their local community.

The pupils, lead by the Ashlawn students also produced a community newsletter and closed with a singing session performed by the County Music Service.

Jo Fricker, Warwickshire County Council’s extended services cluster co-ordinator for Hillmorton, said:  “The day brought the schools in the local area together and united them with a common purpose; to improve our area.  Bringing schools together into a cluster not only maximises the use of resources at our disposal, it builds community cohesion, particularly when we can bring students together at an early age.  The students rose to the challenge of working with colleagues from other local schools to see how we can make changes for the better in and around the area.”
