Uncovering the daring plot behind Bonfire Night!

Warwickshire County Council has taken a comic approach to teaching young people about the Gunpowder Plot.

Whilst many people know the story about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, few know that it all began in Warwickshire.

A new comic, produced by the county council’s Historic Environment Record (HER), aims to explain how Warwickshire was central to the story, with some fun along the way.

The comic tells the story of the Warwickshire conspirators and includes facts, jokes, games and historical information.

Pupils from Dunchurch Boughton C of E Junior School, which is close to the old Red Lion Inn (where the plotters met), helped create the comic and designed the front cover and had a major role with the design process.

Copies of the comic can be obtained from the HER, Warwickshire Museum or downloaded from their website http://timetrail.warwickshire.gov.uk.

Christina Evans, HER project manager, said:  “As well as the historical lesson that the comic provides, there was a lot for the students to get involved in with the production and design.”

The evaluation sheets, filled in by the students who created the design included comments such as ‘I liked the pictures and activities and some of the speech bubbles were funny.’, ‘The front cover was ace’, and ‘I like the wordsearch a lot’.
