Dance workshops break down barriers

Warwickshire County Council’s Community Arts Services and the Arts Council England Lottery have funded dance workshops for people with learning disabilities, as part of an ‘access all areas dance and disability project’.

Twelve people from Warwickshire County Council’s Community Support Services in Nuneaton took part in a dance workshop held at Benn Town Thorns in Rugby.

Foot in Hand Dance Company led the workshops.  They tour the country doing performances and running dance classes and work shops, where they aim to help people to be creative and express themselves through dance.

Rachel Flowers from Warwickshire County Council’s Community Support Services said: “The workshop was fantastic, totally participatory and interactive - everyone had the opportunity to use their bodies as an artistic tool.  People with disabilities face many barriers in life but today there were none, we were all equal and everybody got to contribute.”

"We try to offer people who use our service a wide variety of opportunities and everyone said how much they had enjoyed it."

Louise Katerega, Creative Director of Foot In Hand said: “Dance is a great way of bringing people together, everyone is able to participate and contribute, which builds confidence and self esteem, whilst having fun.”

Nuneaton Community Support Services is part of Warwickshire County Council’s Adult Health and Community Services.
