Footsteps through time

People with an interest in family and local history are invited to visit Warwickshire County Record Office for a free event next week.

The Record Office holds many documents of interest to families and local historians, some of them dating back to the twelfth century. The taster session from 2pm to 5pm on Monday 2 November has been set up to introduce members of the public to the Record Office.

On the day there will be a behind the scenes tour and opportunities to sample workshops from the Record Office’s popular events programme for adult learners, made possible with funding from The Learning Revolution Fund.

The tour will take visitors around the Record Office, including behind the scenes in the strong rooms.  They will be shown how to use the search room and view some original documents

The first workshop takes a look at local history with Warwickshire historian Christine Hodgetts demonstrating how to find out about the lives of ancestors through original records. For the people and places workshop, family historian Jennifer Cranfield will be showing what the census can tell us about people and places through time by looking at one village from 1841 to 1911.

The event will be held at Warwickshire County Record Office, Priory Park, Warwick, CV34 4JS. Booking is strongly recommended so please call 01926 738959 Tuesday to Saturday.

Robert Eyre, Senior Archivist at Warwickshire County Record Office said: "We are keen to introduce the work of the record office to new audiences. If you are interested in local or family history, this provides an opportunity to see what is available in the archives and to experience a free introduction to the kind of workshops that are regularly on offer.”
