What’s love got to do with it?
Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign has been asking young people and a wide range of professionals working with them, ‘what’s love got to do with it?’
The question was posed at the start of the Respect Yourself annual conference held at Bedworth Civic Hall, organised by the county council-run partnership and led by young people from VOX, the Warwickshire Youth Council.
Around 70 delegates attended the day, covering a range of subjects including teenage pregnancy, support for teenage parents, and sexual health and relationships through workshops run by partner organisations, and guest speakers.
The aim of the conference was to enable participants to appropriately target their work to reduce teenage pregnancy rates and improve support for teenage parents. During the day, delegates had the chance to increase their understanding of how to do that and share local examples of good practice, particularly focussing on emotions and relationships.
Jenny Whateley, Respect Yourself Campaign coordinator and conference organiser, said: “The conference was a great opportunity for young people and professionals to hear how the relationship and sexual health agenda has developed, not only in Warwickshire but also the rest of the UK.
“It also provided a chance to understand the needs of young people, including young parents, and whether there were any gaps in services that needed to be addressed.
“The outcomes of the conference will form part of Warwickshire’s response to the changing needs of young people, further building on what has already been achieved over the last 10 years.”
