Taking Flight - Migration within Warwickshire in the Past
Warwickshire County Council invites all those with an interest in family and local history to a FREE event on Tuesday 10 November between 7 and 9 pm.
Many of us think of migration in terms of travelling to another country, but in the past journeys from one district to another could be just as momentous – and not all of them were voluntary!
The workshop, held at the County Record Office in Warwick, will show you how to uncover the stories of those who moved around Warwickshire in the past, using documentary evidence from Warwickshire’s archives.
Stories of enforced migration by parish officials, and poor living conditions caused by sudden influxes of population due to such factors as the increase in urban employment and more people needing to live in towns, are all contained in the archives and this course will give you the chance to see original documents relating to this.
The evening will also include a tour of the Record Office, including behind the scenes in the strongrooms to see where all the precious documents are kept.
Lesley Caine, an Archivist at Warwickshire County Record Office, says: “Having the chance to go behind the scenes and learn about the work of the Record Office is always enjoyable. We hope that the theme of this evening will prove popular.”
Warwickshire County Council is pleased to offer this event for free thanks to funding from The Learning Revolution Fund.
For those interested in attending, the session is held at Warwickshire County Record Office, Priory Park, off Cape Road, Warwick. Booking is strongly recommended, by calling 01926 738959 Tuesday to Saturday.
Warwickshire County Record Office collects, preserves and makes available records to do with the history of Warwickshire and has in its collections documents from as early as the twelfth century, right up to the twenty first.
