Bus improves access to sexual health information in North Warwickshire
Young people in the rural villages of North Warwickshire will be able to get sexual health information on their doorstep, as part of a new project run by Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service.
Specially trained youth workers will travel around parts of the borough on the rural youth bus from Tuesday 10 November offering free, confidential information and contraception as part of ‘Jump on it’ – a joint project with NHS Warwickshire.
The bus will visit four locations every week including outside Shustoke village hall from 7.15pm; Hurley, by the doctor’s surgery at 7.45pm; Wood End on the road outside the Community Centre from 8.15pm; and finishing at Baddesley Ensor, outside the chip shop from 8.45pm. However, these are only estimated times and may be subject to change.
Dr John Linnane, Director of Public Health for NHS Warwickshire and Warwickshire County Council, said: “We want to make sure young people know exactly where to go for sexual health advice, on matters such as Chlamydia screening, and treatment.
“Projects such as Jump on it play a really vital part in delivering information to this age group – especially in more remote parts of the county.”
Charlotte Carr, Area Youth Worker for North Warwickshire, said: “Young people in rural areas may find it more difficult to access sexual health services, so we thought we should take the services to the young people.
“They can speak to us confidentially about any concerns they may have in a relaxed-environment, where we will try and answer any questions or sign post them to the appropriate services when necessary.
