Community Forum brings Hollywood stars
Stars of the silver screen are visiting South Leamington once a month – and local residents are invited to come and see them!
Following previous visits from Audrey Hepburn and Gene Kelly, Liza Minnelli will be the latest star of the ‘Golden Oldies Film Matinee’, which is coming to a screen soon at the Brunswick Healthy Living Centre on Shrubland Street.
Liza stars in the classic film “Cabaret”, which will be the next film to be shown at the Healthy Living Centre, on Wednesday 11th November. People are invited to come along to the matinee performance at 1.45pm for a 2pm start.
Admission is only £2 and includes sandwiches, tea and coffee as well as admission to watch the film in a small and friendly setting.
So far, screenings of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “An American in Paris” have been enjoyed by local residents – but the organisers are keen to encourage more to come along and enjoy the afternoon films.
The ‘Golden Oldies Film Matinee’ project originated as an idea at the June meeting of the South Leamington Community Forum. Community Forums are local events that enable people to find out about issues affecting their area and to influence local decisions.
Anyone interested in local issues can go and discuss them with officers from a range of organisations, including Warwickshire County Council, Warwick District Council and Warwickshire Police.
The theme of the June forum meeting was ‘older people’, and local resident Mo Finnesey came up with the idea that a matinee cinema project should be set up for older people in the Brunswick area of Leamington.
Following a positive response from others at the Community Forum, Mo, working with other local residents including Mick Brayne, who also heads up the local Neighbourhood Watch scheme, got to work on making the idea a reality.
Organiser Mo Finnesey said: “So far we’ve had two showings, only a handful each time came, but they were very interested and very slowly it’s starting to grow. We would like more people to come along.”
Co-organiser Mick Brayne said: “We’re hoping to get as many people as possible with their ideas to actually run a club later. We’re interested in their activities, which activities they’d like to proceed with. But we would love to see a lot more people at the “Cabaret” film showing on the 11th of November.”
Future film matinees will be held on the first Wednesday of each month and ideas for films and/or other activities are welcome.
