Pupils explore similarities in difference
Year 7 pupils at Myton School will be taking part in workshops to celebrate diversity this week.
‘Being Different, Belonging Together’ is a new equality and diversity training course developed by Warwickshire County Council to promote community cohesion and to support the Preventing Violent Extremism agenda.
The pilot course is free to schools and complements PSHE and citizenship classes. The sessions at Myton are part of a programme of workshops taking place at schools around the county.
Council colleagues Shearon Williams, Equality and Diversity Advisor, Rachel Evans - Anti-bullying Coordinator, Youth worker Pindy Sanghera and Sharon Beasly from Rugby PRU devised the training which features role plays, creative work and targeted exercises.
It has been designed to give pupils and understanding of diversity issues early in their secondary school life to help them to respect differences and recognise similarities amongst their peers.
Shearon Williams said: “The workshops offer a supportive environment to challenge the young people’s thinking around issues of diversity.
“Throughout the day pupils will be looking at what they have in common with each other, what it is like to be isolated – both as an individual and a group -and be encouraged to realise the benefits of working together.”
