More positive outcomes despite the recession

School leavers in Coventry and Warwickshire are doing well when it comes to finding education, employment or training, despite the recession.

According to early results, 97.2 per cent of the 10,424 students completing compulsory education in June have continued at school or college, taken up work-based training or moved in to Apprenticeships or employment.

Steve Stewart, executive director of Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire, is pleased with the latest findings.

He said: “Considering the backdrop of a continued recession, this is an excellent result reflecting the determined effort of not only the young people, but also the Connexions staff working with our partners in schools, colleges, local authorities and places of work.”

Connexions provide young people aged 13 to 19 with information, advice and guidance on careers and other issues to help prepare them for work and adult life.

Last year, Coventry and Warwickshire was named as the top performing area in the country for the number of school leavers going in to further education or training in a national survey published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Results for this year will be published next April.

Steve Stewart continued: “Although the results so far show good progress, we continue to look for ways to improve and identify areas where we should concentrate.

“Therefore we will focus our efforts to ensure every young person in the region finds suitable education, training and employment after year 11.””

Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire is run by CSWP Ltd, a membership of organisations including Warwickshire County Council, Coventry City Council and the Learning & Skills Council among others.
