Housebound service bags a boost

A service which helps some of the most frail and isolated people in Kenilworth to enjoy books at home is to benefit from a cash boost, thanks to the kindness of local shoppers.

Waitrose Kenilworth nominated Warwickshire County Council’s Housebound Reader Service as its charity of the month earlier this year and was pleased to present a cheque to the service for £270.

The Housebound Reader Service, which is run by Warwickshire Library Service with the help of volunteers, helps people of any age in Kenilworth who are unable to visit the library and whose friends and relations are unable to do this for them. The service takes books, music, talking books and puzzles to people’s homes and helps to select items that they might enjoy.

Cllr Chris Saint, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Housing at Warwickshire County Council, said: ”We would to give our heartfelt thanks to customers and the Waitrose staff for their generosity, and for making a difference for the better. The housebound service offers a real lifeline to people who would not otherwise get the opportunity to enjoy books and the money will be spent on extra talking books for the service."

Wendy Docic of Waitrose said: “Waitrose is committed to supporting the communities in which we trade, and we are delighted to support this worthwhile cause.”
Waitrose in Kenilworth enjoys strong links with its local library service and since the beginning of February has operated a ‘drop box’ scheme, which allows borrowers to return borrowed books, CDs and DVDs in-store.
