Waving their saving!

People being faced with rising petrol costs can cut their fuel bill by regularly car sharing.

Warwickshire County Council is urging people to find someone at their workplace, college or school and save money whilst reducing congestion by car sharing.

A cost calculator showed that for an average daily journey of 10 miles each way, 5 days a week, doing 50 miles per gallon costs around £421 a year in fuel. Finding someone to car share with and taking it in turns to drive would halve this bill. The cost calculator can be found by going to http://www.sharesmarter.co.uk and clicking the £££ sign.

Councillor Alan Cockburn, portfolio holder for the environment, said “Many companies now have a car share database where people can enter their postcode and find someone who is doing a similar journey and at similar times.”

“Car sharing not only saves petrol costs but it saves wear and tear on your vehicle, reduces the amount of carbon dioxide being emitted by cars and the journey goes by quicker with someone to talk to on the way”.

Laura Vesty, sustainable travel office for Warwickshire County Council, said:  “There are so many benefits to car sharing.  It reduces congestion, emissions, makes roads safer for other users.  For car sharers, there are reduced costs for fuel, parking and wear and tear on the car.  We hope that people will take up this opportunity to sign up to the scheme.”

Anyone can join the national car sharing site http://www.liftshare.com to find people to car share with for any journeys.
