Celebrating Christmas Past

Older people at Warwickshire County Council’s Bracebridge Court care home, in Atherstone, have been getting into the Christmas spirit by reminiscing about ‘Christmas Past’.

Residents and people who use respite care at Bracebridge Court have been meeting together over the last six weeks and reminiscing about Christmas, whilst making Christmas decorations.

Christine Jenking, Activity Coordinator at Bracebridge Court, explained: “We decided to decorate our activity room using the theme of ‘Christmas Past’.  We hired a box of Christmas memorabilia from a local lady and put the contents on display, and it’s got everyone talking.”

“We have been making Christmas decorations, lanterns and paper chains like we did when we were kids,” said resident Celia Mackiwicz.

“We’ve had great fun and lots of laughs over the weeks, especially when we were making santa out of paper mache and his face started to cave in”, said Doreen Hales, who uses Bracebridge Court for respite care -  “but he turned out well in the end.”

“The idea is that everything on display is handmade,” said Christine. “It’s amazing how quickly the room has filled up and it’s a really cheerful place for the residents to come and sit,” she continued.

Visitors, family and friends have also commented how nostalgic the room is and it has stirred lots of memories for them as well.

Milly Thumbwood, manager at Bracebridge Court said: “This was yet another fantastic project organised by Christine that reflects why she recently reached the finals of the Great British Care Awards in the Care Home Activity Organiser Category.”
