Connexions help careers staff build knowledge

Teachers and careers staff have plugged any gaps in their knowledge about the building industry thanks to Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire.

Secondary and Further Education construction and design technology staff from schools in Coventry and Warwickshire, along with Connexions Personal Advisers, attended a professional development day at the site of the new Severn Trent headquarters, currently being built in Coventry.

Representatives from BAM construction – who are managing the building project - showed practical examples of the industry including the latest developments; an understanding of a construction project life cycle; design, architectural and sustainability considerations; and a site tour.

Teachers and careers staff heard of the key skills required in the industry, fresh ideas to link in with the curriculum and the range of careers and training with BAM.

Jenny Stokes from Connexions Coventry and Warwickshire has organised the day and said: “The idea of the development day is to provide teachers and careers staff with an accurate picture of this ever-changing industry to help them enrich the curriculum back in the classroom.

“Having this inside knowledge has real benefits for students who may be thinking about a career in the Construction sector in the future, helping them understand the steps they may have to take to make this happen.”
