Children stay on the Safeside!
Children from Warwickshire are learning how to stay on the safe side, thanks to visits to a state-of-the-art interactive safety education village in Birmingham.
Safeside is a full size indoor village with realistic scenarios including a real bus, train, canal, house, cinema, road-crossing, car and dark alley way.
During the visit, children are taken around the scenarios by trained guides who talk to the children about staying safe. Messages on fire, road, water, railway and home safety are delivered in a lively and interactive way.
Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service are funding the project in partnership with Warwickshire Police and Road Safety team. So far over 150 children from across the county have visited the centre and 17 schools are yet to take part.
Schools Liaison Officer, Ruth Greenhalgh said: "The feedback we have had from schools has been great. During the visits, the children have been learning about how to deal with emergencies, staying safe in the home and the importance of fire safety in a fun and interactive way.
"This will hopefully encourage the children to stay safe by thinking and acting safely when doing everyday tasks such as going on the internet, crossing the road or travelling in a car.”
Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Councillor Richard Hobbs said: “Teaching children how to stay safe is a key element of their learning experience and by attending Safeside we hope the children will learn some valuable lessons they can use in everyday situations.”
