Give generously to your Recycling Collection this Christmas

Residents are being urged to give generously to their recycling boxes and bins this Christmas in a bid to cut down the amount of waste generated by the festivities.

Warwickshire Waste Partnership says that at Christmas people generate about a third more waste, but luckily most of this waste can be recycled.

For example, nationally Royal Mail delivers around 150 million cards and packets each day during the pre-Christmas period. It is estimated that if not recycled, up to 1 billion Christmas cards (17 for every man, woman and child) could end up in bins across the UK.

And in households we will use 750 million extra bottles and glass containers and 500 million drinks cans at this time of year. About 20% to 30% more glass and cans are collected each year over the Christmas period.

If you don’t currently have a recycling box/bin all you need to do is contact your local council:
North Warwickshire Borough Council on 01827 715341
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council on 024 7637 6376
Rugby Borough Council on 01788 533533
Stratford District Council on 01789 267575
Warwick District Council on 01926 410410

Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Recycling is an important activity for us all to take part in all year round but with more waste generated at Christmas than any other time of the year, it’s especially important to fill up our recycling boxes and place them out for collection.”
