Young people set for ‘dancing in the street’
London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are the inspiration for a new project encouraging young people in Warwickshire to take part in contemporary dance.
Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service has secured Positive Activities funding to run workshops teaching young men aged 13 to 19 how to dance in various styles such as break and street dancing.
Professional dancers will lead sessions alongside up-and-coming performers from Beingfrank youth, who will help their peers learn new moves, choreograph new pieces and develop physical strength and stamina.
The 12-week dance workshops will run from January until March 2010 at Bedworth Youth Centre (Tuesday evenings between 6.30pm and 8.30pm from 12 January) and North Leamington School (Thursday evenings between 6.30pm until 8.30pm from 14 January).
The workshops are part of Boys Dancing, a People Dancing programme (part of the West Midlands’ Culture programme for London 2012, funded by Legacy Trust UK, Arts Council England West Midlands and Advantage West Midlands) aiming to get as many people as possible dancing in the West Midlands.
Clare Mitchell, Arts Development Worker for Warwickshire’s Youth and Community Service, said: “As hundreds of athletes start preparations for London 2012, it seems a great time to encourage young people to become active.
“While they won’t be training for a 100 metre sprint or learning how to throw the javelin, they will be learning about self control, stamina, confidence building and healthy lifestyles.”
The project is a partnership between Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service, Being Frank Physical Theatre, Warwick Arts Centre and Dancescape, the sub regional dance agency.
