New employment champion for people with mental health needs

People with mental health conditions in Warwickshire are to get more support into employment, thanks to a new project funded by the Strategic Health Authority.

Warwickshire County Council, in partnership with Warwickshire PCT and leading mental health charity Rethink, have secured £35,000 to fund an employment and education project over the next twelve months.

The aim of the project is to improve the lives of people living with mental illness by helping them to return to and retain employment , as well as developing skills for new opportunities.

A specialist advisor will work with employers and employees to promote mental wellbeing in the workplace and to provide help early on. The provision of temporary work placements will also be arranged for those who are ready for work but need to develop their confidence and skills before they enter employment.

Dr Graeme Betts, Strategic Director for Adult, Health and Community Services at Warwickshire County Council, said: “This is a positive step for Warwickshire and we are grateful to the Strategic Health Authority for this grant.

"The employment and education programme will help people back into work while boosting their self-esteem and quality of life.”

Partners in the project include Warwickshire County Council’s Adult Health and Community Services, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust, Rethink and Jobcebtre plus.
