2009 exam success for Warwickshire’s pupils

The performance tables published today show that young people in Warwickshire performed well, achieving record breaking results in last summer’s GCSE examinations.

The 2009 GCSE results showed that 53.7 per cent of Warwickshire’s 16-year-olds gained five or more GCSE grades A* to C or equivalent including English and mathematics.  At 2 per cent above last year’s results this is the highest percentage in the county’s history and places Warwickshire third highest in the West Midlands region.

Bob Hooper, Acting Head of Service for Education Partnerships and School Development said: "I am delighted to celebrate the success of so many young people and I thank all the teachers and staff in Warwickshire schools who made this possible.

“In these difficult economic times it is good to know that Warwickshire pupils are becoming skilled in core subjects such as English and mathematics and so giving themselves greater opportunity for employment, further education or training.

“The local authority was particularly pleased to note a significant improvement in five schools where GCSE results went up by well over 10 per cent compared to 2008 results.”

In addition, 95 per cent of Warwickshire children have gained Level 1 qualifications in functional English and mathematics, with nearly 60 per cent gaining the higher Level 2 qualification in both these subjects.

Portfolio Holder for Children Schools and Families, Councillor Izzi Seccombe said: “I am pleased to see that overall results are going up in Warwickshire as it is a reassurance of the quality of education available in the county.

“However we will not become complacent and are aware that there is still much to do, we are ambitious to further improve on these results by narrowing any gaps in attainment across the county.”
