Make that unwanted present history
The average person in Warwickshire has this year spent £90 on unwanted presents that are sitting in drawers, in boxes, or even where they were left after being unopened.
A study has found that on average each person spends £425 on Christmas presents, and that of this £90 goes on unwanted gifts.
Often this are put to one side and never used, or worse still are dumped into the waste.
Warwickshire Waste Partnership, a partnership of Warwickshire County Council and the five districts and boroughs, is urging residents to recycle unwanted Christmas gifts.
Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “If people have not informed the present giver and returned gifts that are ‘wrong’ or duplicate, they can end up gathering dust or in the bin.
“If you are a victim of a dodgy present, why not offer it to someone else by using the websites Community Freebay or Freegle, or take them along to your local charity shop.
“Christmas is a time of year when we all receive presents. Instead of binning them, recycle them."
Log onto http://www.communityfreebay.co.uk or http://www.freegle.org.uk . These websites allow people to pass on unwanted things to local people that can put them to good use.
The websites allow users to contact people by email to give or receive free things. Once the link is made, it is then up to the user to arrange collection/delivery with the other person.
Anyone with questions about recycling and disposal please should contact the Waste Management Team at WCC on tel: 01926 412593 or email waste@warwickshire.gov.uk.
