Older people enjoy breakfast benefits
Residents at Warwickshire County Council care homes enjoyed the benefits of the most important meal of the day as they celebrated Farmhouse Breakfast Week from 24-30 January.
At Park View Care Home in Warwick, a different breakfast menu was served for each day of the week with residents tucking into everything from bagels to bacon. Park View created its own dish, a ‘breakfast trifle’ with layers of yoghurt and muesli, as well as holding a taste testing so that residents could try a wider range of cereals and baked products.
Respite resident Olive Meddoms praised the breakfast service and said: “The food has been very good and the staff are always so kind. I can’t fault it.”
The Farmhouse Breakfast Week campaign is a national promotion put together by the Home-Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA), which aims to highlight the importance of breakfast and the range and quality of regional breakfast produce available in the UK. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘breakfast benefits’.
HGCA research reveals that many people have lost touch with traditional foods and those basic culinary skills, such as preparing breakfast, have skipped a generation.
Linda Smith, a Warwickshire County Council care officer at Park View, said: “It’s true that our older residents could teach us a thing or two about breakfast and health professionals all agree we should start the day with a healthy, balanced meal.”
