Improved access to sexual health services in Rugby
Young people in Rugby will be able to access relationship and sexual health information at weekend’s thanks to a new service launching ahead of Valentine’s day.
Youth workers from Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service will join nurses from NHS Warwickshire as part of NHS Chat, which offers a place for under 25-year-olds to get treatment and support with a number of sexual health-related topics such as contraception or sexually transmitted infections.
Sessions will be held once a month for three months at the Hill Street Youth and Community Centre starting on Saturday 13 February from 2pm to 3.30pm, when young people will be able to register for the service and take part in an interactive workshop. There will also be a number of giveaways such as personal safety alarms and alco-tops (bottle covers).
Further Saturday sessions are planned for 20 March and 24 April between 2.00pm and 3.30pm.
Rajvinder Chana, Area Youth Worker for Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service, said: “Through the Youth Service’s ‘You tell us’ survey last year, it was clear that young people in Rugby felt they would benefit from improved access to relationship and sexual health information.
“So with our partners at NHS Warwickshire and working with the Respect Yourself Campaign, we have acted on that and introduced free, confidential sessions offering contraception, support and information at a convenient time for everyone.”
Helen King, Deputy Director of Public Health at NHS Warwickshire, said: “I really welcome this initiative. The healthy choice should always be an easy choice. A dedicated sexual health service that young people can access easily enables them to get advice and seek treatment when they need it.”
