Children’s Centres in the spotlight

A current campaign to promote the many benefits of Warwickshire’s Children’s Centres picks up pace across the county.

The local authority project, involving radio and outdoor advertising on buses and taxis, aims to gather more support for these fantastic centres located in the heart of the county’s communities.

Children’s Centres are great places for families with under 5s and the campaign, which will run until 31 March 2010, is helping spread awareness of some of the many facilities and activities on offer.

County Councillor Izzi Seccombe, and cabinet’s Portfolio Holder for Children Young People and Families said: “This campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the centres and of the vast array of information, support and services they provide. Our intention is to encourage families to visit their local centre and find out what’s going on.

“Families of the under 5s could be missing out on opportunities to attend health visitor or adult learning sessions, pick up financial or parenting advice, access childcare, socialise and share tips with one another and much more besides so we hope the campaign will get these messages across.”

The taxi adverts were unveiled last week at Warwick Children’s Centre and Nursery School and lots of little people popped along to take a ride in the cab. The fleet of 20 vehicles featuring the colourful advert will be on the roads until the end of March.

The centres really do make a big difference to the lives of the families who use them. Hannah Herrington, mother of seven month-old Brooke explained: “For me it’s such a nice change in my usual routine of washing, cleaning and changing nappies; it’s somewhere I can chill out and relax a bit knowing my daughter will be perfectly safe and happy.”

The county’s children’s centres are also sponsoring the mid-morning show on Mercia FM and the radio station’s Thunders are visiting children’s centres throughout February and March taking along children’s TV star Peppa Pig to meet the children.
