Young people’s community image challenge

The gauntlet is being thrown down to a group of young people to come up with a project to improve their image in the local community.

On Tuesday, 23 February, 70 15-year-olds from Shipston High School will be taking part in a ‘Real Context Challenge’ co-ordinated by the Warwickshire Education Business Partnership, a part of Warwickshire County Council.

The real life project is the brainchild of the Positive about Young People team, working with Warwickshire Police.

The project will involve the students initiating a new community scheme to benefit young people in their area and to improve the profile of the young in general to the wider community.

If the Positive about Young People team feel that a really viable project emerges from the day’s activities, then up to £500 of funding will be available to set up the project.

The students will have to consider all aspects of such a challenge, taking into account the marketing, financial issues, and general impact of their ideas for the future. To conclude the activity each team will present their community scheme to a ‘dragon’s den’ of police officers who will consider the pros and cons of each project.

Mark Bolton, Operations Development Manager for Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, said: “This is a really exciting project encouraging young people to do something positive in the community, while helping tackle disaffection and youth crime.

“It also provides young people with key skills such as planning, working together and communication that they can use in every day life.”
