What if?

What if you had a fire in your home or flood water was coming through your front door. Would you know what to do?

This week BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, working together with Warwickshire County Council’s Emergency Planning Unit , Fire and Rescue Service and Coventry City Council’s Emergency Planning Unit,  will be asking the question “What If?” As they aim to raise public awareness about the importance of planning for emergencies.

The three-day campaign running on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire is designed to help people in both Coventry and Warwickshire to be better prepared for emergencies.

The first part of the ‘What If’ campaign will begin on Tuesday 23 February on the Annie Othen Show. The programme will cover how the public can help prepare themselves for emergencies.

The programme will feature a local family who will be put in the spotlight, when they learn how to prepare for an emergency in the home, listeners will experience a live emergency planning exercise in Coventry and Warwickshire Firefighters will be showing how they work with young people in schools to prepare them for emergencies.
Tim Bowtell, Head of Emergency Planning for Warwickshire County Council said:
“It is more important than ever, that residents know what to do in the event of an emergency and the ‘What If’ programme will help people to understand what they can do to be prepared. Simple things such as a grab bag with essential medication and family contact details can really make a difference in an emergency situation.”

Peter Streets, Emergency Planning Manager at Coventry City Council, added: "As a Council we can’t plan for an emergency in isolation and that’s why it’s important to work with other council’s, services and voluntary groups. We all have a personal responsibility to act in an emergency and it’s really important that residents take some simple steps to help.  We’ve seen what happens when we have significant extremes of weather and hopefully the ‘What if’ campaign will help us all to think about our responsibilities."
