Fire ends the lives of two Warwickshire residents
Warwickshire County Councils Fire and Rescue Service are issuing a safety warning after attending two incidents involving mobility scooters in Rugby over the weekend.
Fire crews were called to attend the first incident in the early hours of Saturday morning, 27 February and then again at 1.25am on Monday 1 March to an incident in Harold Cox Place, Rugby.
Area Risk Officer, Mick Leach said
“We are deeply saddened for the families of those residents who lost their lives in the fire. This was a tragic outcome and one which has given us cause for concern”.
“In an emergency, the best escape route is usually the normal way in and out of the home and in light of both of these incidents we are asking residents, where possible, to keep mobility scooters out of communal corridors and away from entrance doors to their house or flat, and of course to ensure that there is a working fire alarm in place.”
“If you are unable to get out, you will need to find a room to wait in until the Fire and Rescue Service arrive. Choose a safe room, ideally one with a phone, and a window that opens. A safe room is particularly important if you have difficulty moving around.”
The Fire Service will be working closely with our partners, including Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire Police to reassure residents in and around sheltered accommodation in Rugby. Firefighters will also be visiting Harold Cox Place and the surrounding area to offer free home safety advice to residents.’
