Older people reign
Music and photographs from the 1950s, Union flags and hats, and a Best of British indoor street party with Coronation chicken were just some of the highlights for older people at an event in Warwick recently.
Residents at Warwickshire County Council’s Park View care home transported themselves back to the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 during a day of reminiscence to mark Dignity Action Day.
Edith Wall, aged 102, shared her memories of the coronation and the celebrations that she enjoyed in Leamington Spa more than 50 years ago.
The reminiscence activities were organised to mark Dignity Action Day, a national initiative to promote dignity in care and to make Thursday 25 February a day to remember for those receiving and providing care.
Annis Tombs, Care Home Manager for Warwickshire County Council, said:
“Reminiscence work is an effective way of promoting dignity in care because rather than the older person only being associated with the time that they are admitted into care, a picture is built of their whole life.
“It’s an enjoyable process and importantly, it helps staff to make a stronger connection with the people they care for and understand their history.”
