New Reablement service promotes independence
Most people want to continue living in their own homes, as independently as possible, as they get older. A new Warwickshire Reablement service is designed to help.
The Reablement service is being introduced in Nuneaton and Bedworth first, and will be rolled out across the county by the end of the year.Reablement will be offered to new home care customers who have been ill, hospitalised, or are struggling to manage in their own homes.
A specialist Reablement team, including occupational therapists, will provide the service for up to six weeks, helping customers to gradually regain the skills and confidence they need for independent living.
Councillor Colin Hayfield, Portfolio-holder for Adult Social Care, said: “All the feedback we’ve got from people is they do want to keep their independence for as long as possible, and preferably within the familiar environment of their own homes. The whole thrust of Adult Services over the last few years has been how to try and help people maintain that independence for as long as possible.”
Councillor Hayfield said Reablement could help people who had suffered a stroke, for example, or individuals with reduced mobility or a minor disability.
“Reablement will focus on helping people to do as much as they safely can for themselves,” explained Kim Harlock, Head of Strategic Commissioning and Performance Management for Adult, Health and Community Services.
“This might mean suggesting some equipment, or perhaps different ways of doing things. We know most people would prefer to manage everyday tasks - like washing, dressing, preparing meals and generally getting about - for themselves. However, ongoing home care services will be available to those who need continuing support after Reablement.”
Evidence from similar services operating elsewhere suggests many older people will need less care and support after Reablement - and some none at all. Research also shows that independent living is better for older people’s general health and wellbeing.
