From Family Heirloom to Archive

How many of us have ever wondered how a collection of family papers turns from a bundle in the attic into part of the county’s treasures at the local archive?

When that family is part of the landed gentry of the county, you can imagine that that ‘bundle’ is going to be a pretty big one!

The records that are often created by a landed family offer opportunities for research for local historians.

Warwickshire County Council offers an insight into how to search for items of interest from these collections at an event on Saturday 27 March.

This hands-on workshop, which takes place at the County Record Office, will focus on how to search the Record Office’s online catalogue for items of interest from an estate collection and will also feature the chance to see some original items from an actual collection, the Waller of Woodcote collection, who were a local family whose papers and photographs have been extensively catalogued.

‘An Introduction to the Waller Collection Online’ is being held on Saturday 27 March between 2 pm and 3.30 pm at Warwickshire County Record Office, Priory Park, off Cape Road, Warwick.  Tickets cost £5.00 and booking is strongly recommended, by calling 01926 738959 Tuesday to Saturday.

The course tutor, Lesley Caine, an Archivist at Warwickshire County Record Office, says: “The aim of the course is to give people the confidence to navigate our online database and access these interesting records”.

Warwickshire County Record Office is involved in safeguarding, managing and developing Warwickshire’s archives so that they can be accessed, interpreted and enjoyed by all those with an interest in Warwickshire’s past and its people. We hold records dating from the twelfth century up to the twenty first.
