Rugby Cattle Market Creativity
An Easter artwork project involving young volunteers will brighten up the hoardings around the former Cattle Market development site in Rugby.
Working in small groups and shifts, around 15 local eight to 13-year-olds will decorate several hoarding panels on Railway Terrace during Easter week, starting on Tuesday April 6.
Local artist Rich Inwood and project leader Patrick Carroll will manage the creative team. Although there will be room for spontaneity, Rich and the young painters have carefully pre-planned their artwork to reflect both the history of the site and its future.
Organised by the county council’s ‘Positive about Young People’ programme, the project has been funded by Crimebeat with additional support from developers Barteak, Housing 21, Orbit Heart of England, Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council’s Care & Choice programme.
Councillor Neil Campbell, Rugby Borough Council’s portfolio holder for Culture and the Economy, said: “We have been working in partnership for a number of years to improve the Cattle Market site.
“The area is steeped in history, and it now has a bright future so I’m really thrilled to hear that young people from the surrounding areas will be instrumental in brightening up the site while work goes on behind the hoardings.”
“This is a really positive joint project,” said Tim Willis, lead officer for Warwickshire County Council’s Care and Choice programme.
“There will be older people living in Farmers Court, an extra care housing complex being built on the site. We want the residents to feel comfortable in their new surroundings, so it’s good to have younger people making a positive contribution to the community from the very start.”
