Young people promote respect in Nuneaton

Young people in Nuneaton have designed a great way to promote respect as part of a Warwickshire Crimebeat-funded project.

A group of 12 to 14-year-olds from the Hill Top POD on Middlemarch Road have designed t-shirts branded ‘Total Respect’ after discussing issues that affected young people in their area.

They were awarded a grant from Warwickshire Crimebeat – a charity managed by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme and funded by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire and the private sector.

Lucy Creed, Youth Inclusion Officer for the Positive about Young People programme, said: “The young people were really enthusiastic about getting involved with this project because of the importance of respecting each other, property, and their community.

“This followed on from another successful project around safer sex and leaving it till later. They designed posters and beanie hats for the POD, which were also distributed to other PODS countywide.”

The Hilltop POD is held on a Wednesday and Friday evening between 5pm and 7pm.

Otherwise known as Positive Operational Drop-in Strategy, PODS are run by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme (PaYP) offering 8 to 13-year-olds a range of activities across the county.

The free sessions – held between one or two evenings a week – include arts and crafts, sport, music and dance as well as a safe place to chat, play video games or finish homework.

POD sessions are run by trained activity workers from PaYP and other appropriate agencies to build relationships, talk, listen, offer guidance and positive role models or to signpost young people to other support services where necessary such as Early Intervention Teams or Mentoring.
