Care workers take centre stage
Care workers from Warwickshire took centre stage with actress and campaigner Amanda Waring when they launched an initiative to promote dignity and respect when it comes to caring.
The actress was invited to Warwickshire by the county council to share her ground breaking film ‘What do you see?’ starring Virginia McKenna, with staff working in residential care homes for older people.
Amanda Waring has been a passionate campaigner for older people’s rights for the past five years and speaks around the world about the importance of dignity in care. She was inspired to make her film ‘What do you see?’ when she witnessed a lack of compassionate care for her dying mother, the actress Dame Dorothy Tutin.
Rachel Crockett of Warwickshire County Council organised the event and said: “We have long recognised the importance of providing skilled and compassionate care services that respect people’s dignity.”
The council has adopted Amanda Waring’s highly acclaimed training programme, also called ‘What do you see?’, which aims to drive up standards and make dignity and respect everyone’s responsibility. Staff have already signed up as dignity champions with the commitment to take action, however great or small.
Amanda Waring praised Warwickshire’s commitment to dignity in care and said: “Compassion and interaction have to be seen as a priority and everyone can embody dignity and compassion in a heartbeat.”
