Doorway film’s opening night
Homeless youngsters are this week demonstrating their creative skills as a film they have crafted premiers at the Odeon cinema in Nuneaton.
On Thursday at 4pm people can watch for the first time a creation produced by young people from Nuneaton and Bedworth and North Warwickshire who are supported by Doorway, a charity that provides advice and support for young homeless people.
The young filmmakers have taken part in a 12-week arts project, facilitated by Community Arts Workshop and funded by Warwickshire County Council as part of the 2009 – 10 Arts and Health programme.
The participatory arts workshops have enabled young people the opportunity to produce, direct, perform in and edit their own production.
Over the course of the project, the young people have worked with professional filmmakers, composers and choreographers to produce a film which aims to challenge people’s views and opinions of youth homelessness.
Chris Bradley, the Director of Film for Community Arts Workshop said of the project: "The process of producing this film with Doorway has been such a remarkable experience for the Community Arts Workshop.
“The young people from Doorway have been so passionate and enthusiastic about the film and have been so clear about the messages they are wishing to convey. The resulting film stands testament to all of their hard work, determination and ability to believe in themselves and each other. As an audience, we owe it to these young people to view their film and to listen to what they have to say."
Hana Sodha, Housing Support Worker said of the project: "Doorway now has a much improved working relationship with some of the harder to reach young people that took part in the project.
“The young people are taking a more active role in the running of the young people’s group and other Doorway services, such as attending the management committee. This is an excellent outcome for Doorway and this is something we hope to continue to build on through positive activities and ongoing housing support."
The event will be introduced by the young filmmakers and will include a question and answer session after the screening.
