Hats off to creativity

Adults with disabilities and children from the Nuneaton area have paraded their artistic creations after keeping a special project under their hats for the last three months.

Ten adults from Nuneaton Community Support Services and 25 children from independent charity Hub 119 have been working together on a creative project inspired by hats.

Thanks to funding from the County Council’s Arts Service, local artist Michaella McMillan has been running workshops at 23e Abbey Street in Nuneaton.

Michaella McMillan was delighted with the final results and said: “The participants came up with the idea of ‘hats’ because we could have fun making them and then the children can use them for dressing up and imaginative play.”

As well as providing a fun activity, the project has brought together different groups of people, to have fun and build relationships and to give future generations a positive experience of people with disabilities.

Anne Harrison, Service Manager for Warwickshire County Council, attended a celebration event to mark the end of the project and said: “The focus of our services for people with disabilities is to support people to be part of their own community.  This project is an excellent example of a really innovative way to do this.”

“It’s been fantastic to be part of the celebration and see how much everyone has enjoyed it and benefited from it.”

Nuneaton Community Support Service run a day service from Monday to Friday for people with disabilities at the Abbey Street base, and work in partnership with Hub 119, which support young people and their families, and are based in Camp Hill.

"Two mornings a week they work together to deliver a drop-in service for parents and children, at the town centre base. Children can do fun activities, giving parent’s valuable respite, and time for themselves.
