Firefighters tackle factory blaze

Around 50 firefighters are tackling a blaze at Abbey Metal Finishing Co Ltd this morning.

Fire crews were called to the incident at 6.03am.  On arrival crews were faced with a fire at a factory which was well alight. Due to nature of the business, fire crews have asked residents to keep windows and doors closed. Businesses are also being asked to keep their air conditioning off.

Weddington Road is closed to traffic and Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service have an exclusion zone around the area.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Simon Frost said:
“Fire crews are making good progress at the scene. The two local schools, Higham Lane and Weddington School are open.  However, we are urging people to stay away from the area where possible due to the impact of the chemicals involved in the fire. The bulk of the fire is now out, however we will be on site until the area is made safe.”

Alan Franks, Environmental Services Director at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: “Our Head of Environmental Services, Paul Knight, is at the site liaising with the Fire Service to ensure that any possible detriment to local residents, businesses and the environment is kept to an absolute minimum.”

Fire crews are also liaising directly with the Environment Agency to manage any environmental impact the fire may have.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has now begun.
