Cartoon cows – not Easter bunnies

Hoardings around the former Cattle Market development site in Rugby had a makeover during Easter week, thanks to the creative talents of some young volunteers.

Working in small groups and shifts, around 15 local eight to 13-year-olds decorated several hoarding panels on Railway Terrace over four days – and completed the project on Friday 9 April.

Local artist Rich Inwood and project leader Patrick Carroll, from Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, managed the creative team, who designed the artwork to reflect both the history of the site and its future. The brightly-coloured finished piece features cartoon cows, flowers, and important messages selected by the young people themselves.

“Passers-by were very complimentary about the work in progress and motorists pipped and gave it the thumbs-up as they went past,” said Patrick.

“We had no negative comments at all. Everyone seemed really pleased we were brightening the place up. The young people had a great time, contributing ideas and learning artwork techniques from Rich.”

Organised by the county council’s Positive about Young People programme, the project was funded by Warwickshire Crimebeat with additional support from developers Barteak, Housing 21, Orbit Heart of England, Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council’s Care & Choice programme.
