From kerbside to compost
Warwickshire County Council has awarded Envar with a year’s contract to compost kerbside-collected green waste in the north of the county.
From 1st May 2010 the green garden waste from North Warwickshire, Nuneaton and Bedworth and from Grendon Household Waste Recycling Centre will be processed by Envar in partnership with Woodfield’s Recycling Ltd - a family run company based near Fillongley.
Envar (part of the ADAS group of companies) are recognised experts in the field of organic waste treatment and recycle more than 400,000 tonnes of beneficial organic material to agriculture per year.
This partnership brings together Envar’s experience of organic waste treatment and marketing with that of Woodfield’s to produce a high quality compost that will be Certified to PAS100 Standards and the Compost Quality Protocol **
The resulting 10,000 tonnes of high-grade quality compost will be used primarily as an agricultural fertiliser, but it is also hoped that some of the Woodfield’s compost will be available in Warwickshire as part of ‘compost awareness week‘.
The partnership will also be looking at the supply of a bagged product for sale and delivery in one tonne ‘dumpy’ bags or 25 kg bags under Woodfield’s own brand of the same name.
This innovation will allow the end product to be supplied back to Warwickshire homes and surrounding areas and demonstrates the ‘closed loop’ ideals of real recycling.
Andrew Urquhart, Development director for Envar, said: “We are delighted to be working closely with Warwickshire County Council and Woodfield’s – we feel that this unique partnership will satisfy the county council’s goals of increased recycling and beneficial use of waste material.”
Arthur Woodfield, Managing Director of Woodfield’s Recycling, said: “Solid partnership is the way we can grow our established business and we are looking forward to working on other similar projects with Envar and Warwickshire County Council in the future.”
The collaboration between Warwickshire County Council and Envar adds to Envar’s already diverse offer which includes in-vessel composting, anaerobic digestion facilities, food manufacturing residues, paper crumb and other wastes which benefit agricultural soils.
Woodfield’s, who farm approximately 500 acres of land will enhance their already strong commitment to the environment by utilising the compost on their own farmland thus reducing the need for artificial (oil based) fertilisers.
Once used on farm, compost improves many soil characteristics including water holding capacity. It improves root formation and also helps to combat soil erosion and nitrogen runoff.
