Fire service committed to reducing house fires in Warwickshire
On average there have been between 200 and 250 accidental dwelling fires in Warwickshire each year. These incidents have the potential to cause significant harm or injury to residents living in their homes.
In light of this, Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is now using a unique mapping system to identify those residents who could be most at risk. The system examines community groups, household types and areas which have suffered the greatest volume of incidents over a two year period. It then maps out key areas where residents would benefit most from the fire safety intervention work offered by the Fire Service.
Community Fire Safety Manager, Maria Smedley said:
“Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is continually developing strategies to target high risk groups within our communities. Using the Mosaic mapping system is only one part of that, but it is already proving to be a valuable resource to identify who our most vulnerable residents are.
“As part of this drive we have also increased the amount of home fire safety checks we are carrying out within our communities to help individuals and families to identify potential risks and prevent fires occurring in their homes in the first place. We aim to fit a significant number of smoke detectors into homes across the county, although they don’t stop a fire occurring, this is the best option for early detection of a fire in the home.“
