Firefighters rescue horse rider and horse

Crews from Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service were racing against the clock to rescue a woman trapped under a horse yesterday.

Crews from Rugby and Leamington were called to the incident on a bridle way off Green Lane, Brinklow at 17.21 on Monday 3 May. On arrival they found a 64 year old woman trapped under a horse. She had been trapped for around 45 minutes before the alarm was raised and was suffering from mild hyperthermia.

Station Manager, Mick Leach said:
“It was a difficult rescue as the horse had fallen on top of the woman and so we were unsure whether there were any injuries which may restrict us getting her out. Fortunately we were able to manoeuvre the horse using a 4x4, a tractor and a winch and was able to pull the casualty out on a long board. Once out, the woman was taken to hospital. It then took around 20 minutes to get the horse out of the ditch. The horse was clearly shaken by the ordeal, and took a few minutes to find its feet.

“We would like to thank everyone who came to help us during the rescue including a local farmer and vet.”
