WCC helps make your garden grow
Warwickshire residents can now support local recycling initiatives and put green waste to good use by buying compost at some of Warwickshire’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Warwickshire County Council in partnership with Midlands Composting and Recycling Ltd, Waste Recycling Group, The Shakespeare Hospice and Age Concern Warwickshire will be providing compost for sale at three Recycling Centres in support of Compost Awareness Week, which, this year, is all about learning how to make a difference with compost by composting at home.
The 9th annual Compost Awareness Week got underway on Sunday and is the theme for this year is ‘Give it a grow’ and aims to encourage everyone to try and grow vegetables at home.
40 Litre bags of compost will be provided for sale at £3 per bag at the following Recycling Centres:
Burton Farm in Stratford-upon-Avon
Hunters Lane in Rugby
Judkins in Nuneaton
Every year thousands of tonnes of kitchen and garden waste is needlessly thrown in the dustbin, and usually ends up in expensive, unsightly and environmentally damaging landfill sites.
Did you know that composting at home for just one year can save global warming gases equivalent to all the CO2 your kettle produces annually, or your washing machine produces in three months? (WRAP)
Simply put your biodegradable material in a compost bin, ensuring an even mix of ‘greens’ (grass cuttings, peelings etc) and ‘browns’ (leaves, twigs, paper and card etc) and leave it to breakdown for 9 months or so. The end result is a rich, nutritious crumbly compost, ideal for improving soil or using as a mulch to suppress weeds.
